Telehealth for Mast Cell Activation Disease

Times are changing, and more and more providers are engaging in virtual sessions for patient care. Individuals with MCAS are especially interested in these types of visits due to our unique constraints with travel and frequent reactivity to different environments. Many types of professionals are limited in their ability to practice telemedicine (especially across state or country lines) due to their practice acts and licensing authorities, but this is improving.

I’ve been compiling resources for several months now, in an effort to share a comprehensive list of providers who offer telehealth visits to patients with MCAS (and comorbidities like POTS and EDS). This list will continue to grow and get updated. (If you know of a good resource who is not on this list, please send an email to mastcellsunited@gmail.com)

The goal here is to connect patients with a “multidisciplinary dream team” of providers who can assist them in healing holistically. Specifically, each person on this list offers a unique approach to management of mast cell activation disease and other chronic conditions. These providers are likely to think outside of the box. With a few exceptions, they may not be appropriate for patients who are ONLY seeking an MCAS diagnosis, but these providers perform the important work of helping point patients in the right direction of uncovering root issues to help restore homeostasis, calm inflammation, and remove the underlying factors that can reap mast cell havoc.

I do believe that in-person care is extremely important in some regards, so this is not necessarily a replacement of other care, but hopefully it will open up more resources for those patients who are home bound and severely ill.

The criteria for providers to be on this list includes those who

  • Are knowledgeable in MCAD and offer patients a unique or novel approach to healing
  • Offer telehealth services across the United States (unless otherwise specified)

The providers are listed in alphabetic order within their category of expertise. Again, if you know of a good resource who is not on this list, please email me!

Judy Tsafrir, MD

Holistic Adult & Child Psychiatry/Functional Medicine

note: telehealth services currently available for residents of Massachusetts and Maine

Judy Tsafrir MD Website

Dr. Judy Tsafrir is a board certified, conventionally trained adult and child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, a Harvard Medical School faculty member, with a private practice of holistic adult and child psychiatry located in Newton, Massachusetts. She has a deep curiosity about development and healing, and has an open mind about trying diverse approaches to help her patients. Dr. Tsafrir is familiar with working within a traditional medical/psychiatric paradigm, but no longer endorses it. Too frequently suppression of symptoms with pharmaceuticals results in the degradation of health rather than healing. Her approach is now oriented to identifying the root cause of illness in the tradition of functional medicine. Increasingly she has begun to work with many of her patients to help them make the many changes necessary to optimize their health, which will eventually allow them to wean off prescription psychiatric medications or at least to reduce the dosages. This is not always possible, but with a variety of holistic approaches, including attending to the emotional and spiritual dimensions of a person’s life, appropriate diet, healing the immune system via supporting gut health and rebalancing biochemistry, it is often possible. Her most recent interest and developing area of expertise is in treating Environmentally Acquired Illness, specifically mold toxicity. Mold toxicity is largely unrecognized by conventional psychiatry and typically results in symptoms that prompt consultation with a psychiatrist, such as depression, anxiety, fatigue insomnia and cognitive changes to name a few. Dr. Tsafrir is skilled in the use of energetic/spiritual methodologies including Reiki, Astrology, the Tarot and Shamanism, and will include these modalities when there is interest. She loves her work, which she sees as helping her patients become most fully themselves, enjoying optimum health and vitality, and creating and living a life they love. Dr. Tsafrir believes that healing occurs through the integration of heart, mind, body and spirit. It is only through healing ourselves that we can most effectively contribute to healing the planet.
